🧘 Food, Mind & Meditation: The Ananda Marga Way of Living
According to Ananda Marga’s yogic way of life , food is not merely a source of physical nourishment. What we eat can also influence our mind, emotions, energy and meditation . For this reason, a sentient (sáttvika) diet is encouraged for those seeking physical well-being, mental clarity and spiritual development.
🌱 Why avoid onion and garlic?
In the yogic classification of food, onion and garlic are generally regarded as static (támasika) . Although they are widely used as food and have various nutritional properties, the yogic dietary approach considers their overall effect on the mind unsuitable for deeper spiritual practices.
For a meditation practitioner, the aim is not only to maintain a healthy body but also to cultivate a calm, subtle and concentrated mind . Foods that create excessive stimulation, heaviness or restlessness are therefore avoided as part of this discipline.
🌿 Flavour without onion and garlic
A sentient diet does not have to be bland. Many natural spices and herbs can create rich flavours while supporting a balanced way of eating:
- Turmeric – widely valued in traditional diets and adds warmth and colour.
- Cumin & coriander – aromatic spices commonly used to enhance flavour and digestion.
- Fennel & cardamom – provide freshness and a naturally pleasant aroma.
- Asafoetida (hing) – used in small quantities to give dishes a deep savoury flavour and is a popular alternative in onion- and garlic-free cooking.
🥗 Food as part of Sádhaná
Ananda Marga encourages us to become conscious not only of what we think and do, but also of what we eat . A sentient diet, together with meditation, ethical living, adequate rest and disciplined habits, forms part of a holistic way of life.
The purpose is not simply dietary restriction. It is to create conditions that support a healthy body, balanced mind and progressive spiritual life .
Eat consciously. Live consciously. Meditate deeply. 🌿🧘
